ROBOTIC WELDING OF STEEL HINGE

At Schenke Tool Co., we specialize in developing innovative solutions that allow us to deliver better quality with greater throughput. Our success as a manufacturer is built on innovation, and the investment in cutting-edge equipment, which is highlighted in our Yaskawa Motoman robotic welding cell. This state of the art welding system provides a level of flexibility, productivity, and precision that is unmatched with other methods. The precision and consistency that this resource delivers, allowed us to help a customer in the hardware industry with the manufacturing of the hinge highlighted here.

This project was a challenge for a number of reasons; the first was that the design called out tolerances of ±0.005″ on the welding. This required high strength, durable fixturing that would hold up for the entire 600 part run. Fortunately, we employ a team of seasoned professionals that were able to fabricate robust fixturing that would hold up to the project requirements. Before the welding phase, the mild steel hinge components which measured 3/8″ x 2″ x 2.5″ were manufactured in-house to tolerances of ±0.001″ in our machine shop. However, before production could commence, a precision brass prototype was required to verify proof of concept. Quality was maintained throughout the welding phase with comprehensive dimensional and visual inspections where performed to maintain quality. This seemingly simple job was in fact far more complex and involved but, with our skilled staff and advanced manufacturing capabilities we were able to complete the entire project in a few weeks. The customer was very pleased with the results, including the quality and precision.
